SHANNON PULLED INTO the driveway and got out of her car. She had her let’s talk face on.

He handed Adelia his keys. “You look like you’re going to fall over. Go inside.”

As soon as the door closed behind her, Shannon grabbed his arm. “I know you’re a grown man and all, but you need to slow this down.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“Adelia has a hickey the size of Rhode Island.” Shannon pressed her fingers to the spot between her neck and collarbone. “Right there.”

Freezing droplets of reality trickled down his back. “Oh,” was all he could think to say.

“She’s going to leave. And it’s going to hurt you.”

He rubbed his hands across his lips, remembering the feel of Adelia’s mouth of his. “I know what I’m doing. It’s temporary and we both know it.”

She threw her hands up in surrender. “Do what you want. But don’t be surprised when this goes straight to hell.”

He ignored her. He didn’t want warnings and reality. He wanted Adelia in his arms.

Inside, he found her snoring in his chair with her neck stretched uncomfortably over one arm. He shook her shoulder, but she was out cold.

He tried to lift her but she was dead weight and he was woozy and the bedroom was a million miles away. Grabbing the blankets and pillows off the couch, he spread them on the floor, then tugged her off the chair and onto the blankets, rolling her onto her side. She didn’t move so much as an eyelash as he curled up behind her, wrapping an arm around her so she wouldn’t roll onto her back.

He closed his eyes and kissed her neck. Shannon’s worried face flashed like a strobe behind his eyes, but he squeezed them tighter until he banished the image. “I know what I’m doing,” he muttered as the whisky in his blood lulled him to sleep.
